Chelsea got their Premier League title defence off to a forgettable start, falling 3-2 at home to Burnley in a match the Blues finished with nine men.
The signs of a bad afternoon for Chelsea came when captain, Gary Cahill, got a straight red card in the 14th minute.
And it took 10 minutes after Cahill’s red card for Burnley to make things worse for the home side with Sam Vokes putting the visitors ahead.
Stephen Ward then made it 2-0 in spectacular manner, firing a volley past Chelsea keeper, Thibaut Courtois, from a tight angle after 39 minutes.
Stamford Bridge then fell silent in the 43rd minute after Sam Vokes got his second to make it 3-0 and give Antonio Conte‘s side a mountain to climb.
But it looked like record signing, Alvaro Morata, would inspire an unlikely comeback, scoring 10 minutes after replacing Michy Batshuayi.
And though Cesc Fabregas received a red card in the 81st minute, Morata’s found David Luiz to make it 3-2 in the 87th minute and set up a dramatic finish.
However, it was Burnley that came closest to scoring again with Robert Brady‘s free-kick coming off the post.
Burnley held on in the end to claim a first ever Premier League win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The result is also the first time Chelsea has lost an opening league game of the season since 1998.
