His nickname in his heydays may have been “Mathematical”, but on the night Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami could have very well been named “Eloquent”.
Picking up the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice on film maker Tunde Kelani, the Green Eagles star saluted the revolutionary spirit of Nigerian entertainment and film practitioners.
He started by explaining that he was (obviously) not Tunde Kelani, the astute broadcaster, director and movie director, cinematographer. “I am not Tunde Kelani, I am taller, more handsome and more talented than he is,” he said to the widespread laughter. He went on to reveal that his friend Kelani was on the holy pilgrimage to Mecca and asked that he accepted the award on his behalf.
He added, “We are on the verge of a new revolution, a renaissance. And this is being championed by the movie and the music industries. When you become aware of what you’re doing, you will realize that a new black civilization is about to be unleashed on earth, and you are going to be the champions of that [cause].”
Tunde Kelani was honoured for this decades-long career that has produced movies such as Saworoide, Thunderbolt, Maami and many others.
