Earlier today, Theresa May announced at a press briefing in London that she was going to be stepping down on June 7th as the United Kingdom Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister’s resignation comes after six months of failed attempts to get the parliament to approve her Brexit Divorce deal. May finally accepted on Friday that London may need a new leader to get the job done.
The Brexit divorce deal is a financial settlement the United Kingdom is expected to pay the European Union before their exit from the union on October 31st of this year.
In her speech, she talked about how she was saddened about her inability to finish the Brexit deal and expressed hope that her successor would find a way to achieve this.
May is expected to stay on as the Prime Minister until a replacement has been sworn in in her place. She was moved close to tears while she said: “I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold, the second female prime minister, but certainly not the last.”
Theresa May became the second female Prime Minister in the History of the United Kingdom on the 13th of July, 2016.
