German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, who has come under fire lately for policies which Germans say have inspired recent acts of terrorism, had tomatoes thrown at her during a campaign rally on Tuesday.
The 63-year-old was on the receiving end of protesters’ anger as they let their feelings about her ‘open doors’ policy during the 2015 migrant crisis – one which allowed migrants from war-torn Syria into Germany – known.
It was during the rally that two tomatoes were thrown during different parts of the Chancellor’s speech.
One struck her left hip while the other is reported to have struck a moderator at the rally identified as Claudia von Brauchitsch according to Bloomberg.
She was also called a ‘liar’ and ‘betrayer of her people’ during the rally, although she appeared unfazed by the incident.
The noisy gathering was fresh evidence that not all votes are guaranteed at the general election on September 24 in which she is running for a fourth term in office.
Police later said today that they would be investigating yet to be identified persons on suspicion of attempted bodily harm and attempted property damage.
