Highlights From the 2017 American Music Awards

The 2017 edition of the American Music Awards took place yesterday; 19th November at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The event featured some of the most amazing, gravity-defying, crowd-pleasing performances one could ever hope for. From Tracee Ellis Ross’ masterful turn as the night’s host to Pink’s sky-high performance of “Beautiful Trauma” and the adorable tribute to the iconic Diana Ross, the show was packed with sweet, funny moments.

Two Major highlights from the event were Selena Gomez’s Performance and Diana Ross’ Tribute

The 25-year-old had teased her first live performance since undergoing a life-saving kidney transplant, and sang her DJ Marshmello collaboration Wolves at the AMAs 2017.

Gomez’s dark and gritty performance of her Wolves had a lot of fans confused. The singer started the song by crawling across the stage after what appeared to be a car crash, and ended up drowsily performing on the hood of the vehicle (where a lot of viewers seemed to think she was lip-syncing). Gomez’s big AMAs return left a lot of people baffled and a little cold.

Selena literally just stumbled around the stage, got carried around, dragged off the car, and lip synced yet y’all think she’s talented

So Selena Gomez’s big comeback they’ve been shoving down our throats for a month was her lip syncing and rolling around on the floor? #AMAs pic.twitter.com/CgElzbVSok

Diana Ross delivered an epic medley of a slew of her biggest hits. It was a sweet celebration made even more heartwarming when she was joined on stage by some of her cute grandchildren. While her granddaughter Jagger — the daughter of Evan Ross and Ashley Simpson — was utterly adorable, it was her 8-year-old grandson Raif-Henok who stole the spotlight, even from his famous grandma. He blew kisses to the crowd, danced and even did the splits. The kid looked like a natural superstar.

The biggest winner of the night was Bruno Mars who scooped seven awards in the following categories; Artiste of the Year, Video of the Year, Favourite Male Artiste(Pop/Rock), Favourite Album (Pop/Rock), Favourite Male Artiste (Soul/R&B), Favourite Album (Soul/R&B), Favourite Song (Soul/R&B).

Other big winners include; Keith Urban, Drake (Favourite Artiste – Rap/Hip-hop), Kendrick Lamar (Favourite Album – Rap/Hip-hop), DJ Khaled and Diana Ross was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Last year, Drake led all nominations with 13 scores, breaking a record previously held by Michael Jackson. He ended up scooping up four trophies by the end of the night.
