Singer, actress, and photographer Toni Tones has shown how much of a passionate advocate of women’s rights and empowerment she is by working with ‘Yaba Market March‘ movement, which was started by Damilola Marcus to end the scourge of harassment many Nigerian women face when they visit marketplaces.
Recall that Damilola along with a group of women had organized and embarked on a peaceful market protest at Yaba market a few weeks ago to campaign against marketplace groping, abuse and physical assault.
The women marched peacefully, urging men at the market not to harass them, as they chanted their slogan, “stop touching us.” They were not deterred by the aggressiveness of the men present. The move yielded instant results as the very next day, there were reports from women saying they had visited Yaba market and no one had touched them.
Tones who was alerted to the group’s activities via social media was deeply moved by their cause and consequently, sought to help them develop sustainable measures to ensure that women continue to remain safe while visiting marketplaces.
To this end, the “King of Boys’ actor facilitated a meeting with Her Excellency, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, wife of the Vice President of Nigeria, who is equally an activist to discuss ways in which the government could help support the movement.
Mrs Osibanjo graciously hosted the actress and the Market Match team in her home, where they discussed the group’s agenda and the different ways the government could render support.
The meeting ended on a very positive note, with lots of impactful reforms deliberated on.
Mrs. Osinbajo also came up with an additional slogan for the movement, as follows: “I’m shopping no touching.”
