Reality Check: Just How Ready Is Efe For A New EP?

It’s almost 365 days since Efe Ejeba emerged winner of popular reality TV show; Big Brother Naija. Since the show ended, the rapper has sought to earn the respect of music lovers across the country but it seems as though the more he tries, the less he succeeds. With one release after another, Efe is yet to make a hit score or at least meet the expectation(s) of his now impatient supporters.

Prior to the reality show, the rapper had released a 14-track EP titled Lagos. With this project, Efe attempted to document his struggles, and narrate tales of the hassle that everyday hustlers face in Lagos. While this was a laudable attempt, it is safe to say that his failure to deliver on this mission was woeful.

From a production to musical and lyrical standpoint; his Lagos EP in simple terms epitomizes the realms beyond creative incompetence. Nobody deserved to be put through such musical torture.

While one could have attributed his previous creative shortcomings to lack of resources and par production equipments, his more recent performances do not leave one with so much hope. Since exiting the Big Brother Naija house in April 2017, not so much improvements have been made in regards to his performance as a rapper/lyricist.

Throughout his more recent singles; Based On Logistics, Mercy, and Somebody, you will find litters of unintelligent deliveries and poor musical construction save for the Olamide assisted “Warri” which saw him deliver on a more decent level.

More worrying is the fact that the rapper doesn’t seem to see a need for improvement. During a 2017 interview on Rubin Minds with Ebuka, Efe stated that people are going to come around to his sound insinuating that the public fuss around his music is somewhat baseless. This is the narrative that the title of his soon-to-come EP equally denotes.

To commemorate his birthday, the rapper has just announced that he’ll be releasing a 7-track EP on Sunday, 25th February which title he revealed; “Am Sorry, Am Winning”. Perhaps the glaring grammatical error in the project title can be excused (as he is a local rapper that thoroughly identifies with Nigerian pidgin).

I’m not sorry, I’m winning is a statement of no regrets. A statement that denotes zero concerns.

In truth, saturating the market with tons of materials doesn’t solve a problem. The issues around Efe’s music surpasses just his inability to rap. His team needs to focus on core internal issues like getting him songwriters, experiment with other producers and find an internal resolve as to what originality and staying true to a local aesthetic means to him and those who have expectations of him.

Perhaps, all of these shortcomings will be addressed on his forthcoming “Am not sorry, am winning” EP.
