Last weekend, Mavin records artiste Di’ja released a new seven-track EP titled ‘Aphrodija’. This is a long-awaited release as it is her first project since signing onto the Don Jazzy led label three years ago.
While members of her Mavin 1.0 set; Reekado Banks and Korede Bello have gone on to release their respective albums, Di’ja has been a little out of the radar – one of the reasons being that she tied the knot with her beau and welcomed a baby, therefore, causing her to go on what could be regarded as a paternity break.
While her ability to sing is unquestionable, one has had to question the quality of her artistry as she is yet to make a solid solo impact and provide an absolute definition of her sound.
More than any other year, 2017 has been a relatively slow year for the singer – all her singles released earlier this year didn’t quite hit the mark and she can be said to have lost the attention of the mainstream consumers that caught up to her through her features on the Mavin records all-star hits; Dorobucci and Adaobi. On a second thought, maybe she isn’t entirely focused on appealing to the traditional mainstream (pop) audience. How can we possibly make a decisive judgment when we’ve never been provided with a full package? This is what music projects are for – they serve as a window into the upper echelon of a musicians artistry.
She’s finally served up a project and upon listening to the Aphrodija extended playlist, the first thought that came to mind is the phrase; ‘better late than never’. While it is a late release, the quality cannot be downplayed – it is an impressive definition of Di’ja’s artistry.
The project sees the singer flaunting the height of her mastery. The opening track; Ordinary Day sees Di’ja holding it down with a very alternative approach. The slow-tempo instrumental allowed her sermon of hope and refreshing lyrics to sink in. ‘Everyday is a chance to start again’, she sang.
The Tiwa Savage assisted track ‘The Way You Are’, ‘My Lover’ which enlists Reekado Banks, as well as the three other songs on the tape took the pop route. Urban-Highlife, Electronic sounds, and House grooves were all that Di’ja experimented with for her pop strikes.
Di’Ja is not a typical pop artiste neither is she an alternative singer but she possesses a level of mastery that allows her to create conveniently in both niches. The slow-tempo jazzy tune ‘Save Me’ validates this assertion.
There is definitely more to Di’Ja and this EP provides a right amount of closure.
