Russia 2018 And Africa’s Lost Sons: European Footballers Of African Descent

By Prince Etim

As the Round of 16 commences today at the ongoing Russia 2018 World Cup, there are no African teams participating- the first time since 1982. All five countries- Nigeria, Morocco, Egpyt, Tunisia and Senegal all got dumped out in the group stages.

But that is not to say Africa is no longer part of the tournament; there are still a number of players of African descent who play for European teams. Some of them were born in Africa and were raised in Europe; others were born there but have one or both parents that are African migrants.
