England failed to secure a spot in the finals of the Russia 2018 World Cup after an extra time defeat to Croatia on Wednesday night. This was their first appearance in the semi-final since 1990 and winning could have put them in a chance to win their second world cup title since their first one in 1966.
The Three Lions had been impressive throughout the tournament having the highest goal scorer of the competition Harry Kane as captain of the side.
The British press which has a reputation of being very critical had backed the English team throughout the campaign and even in defeat, there has been a lot of praises for the team for their rejuvenated style of play under former international Gary Southgate.
A look at the front pages of major newspapers in England on Thursday morning shows an overwhelming support for the team as they prepare to head back home after their third-place game with Belgium.
With this, the team now know they won’t be meeting a hostile environment and though it is heartbreaking for most of the members of this golden generation squad, they know they can count on the support of their countrymen as preparations for Qatar 2022 begins.
