Fela Anikulapo Kuti is the revered musical icon and activist whose music and lifestyle continues to inspire many youths, especially musicians who look up to him for what he represented when he was alive.
Fela created the genre Afrobeat which he used to pass his message of activism and disdain for the Nigerian government, a move which made him to always be on the bad side of the government, costing him multiple years of detention in prison as well as put his family at risk. For all that reason, his family guards their father’s values and works and jealousy.
Seun Kuti, one the songs of Fela has come out to clarify that in as much as many people want to identify with what Fela did in his lifetime, most of the sufferings the late icon passed through, he did with members of his family. He recalled how government agents visited their home when he was nine, killing one of Fela’s boys unprovoked. He narrated the sufferings his stepmother who broke her neck from the attack on them by soldiers. He also revealed that his mother had a broken bayonet stitched into her and couldn’t walk for 18months.
This is coming days after he slammed American rapper, Kanye West, who said the spirits of Fela, Bob Marley and 2Pac were flowing in him and likened himself to late iconic musicians. Seun warned the G.O.O.D Music boss to keep Fela’s name off his mouth as he was nothing like his father..

Whatever you think Fela went through, he went through with his family. We were his rock. My mother used to tell me bed time stories about all the scars on her. My step mum, Najite was the first person the soldiers saw in kalakuta, she was swimming, they picked her up by her head from the pool and broke her neck!! My mother had a broken bayonet stitched into her and she couldn’t walk for 18months. The amount of state sanctioned violence I have seen in my life as a child. When I was 9 I saw the cops shot and kill one of my dads boys in front of shrine and just left him there for nothing. Fela tried to protect us but u can’t protect anyone from that! You know these fucking cops would come to our house and just shoot up the place at least 2ice a week? Do y’all know that? Or u think this is just play play? See Fela’s music is a gift for the world and everyone is welcome but our legacy is ours alone, to protect and nurture. Y’all fakers stay waaaaay back. This isn’t your space. #getthesax
