DMW boss, Davido has once again spoken to clear all doubts that he sold out the 20, 000 capacity 02 Arena event centre in London where he held a solo headline concert in January. But this time, he further reveals that he had to pay Tens of thousands of pounds as fine for extending the time to kick off when the venue was half empty at 8 pm as scheduled.
The Nigerian pop star was a guest of popular DJ Ebro on the Ebro in the Morning show on HOT 97. Davido told Ebro he was ready to get on the stage by 8 pm but the guests came late for the event.
“My boy came and told me, ‘hey you can go on stage right now,’ ‘I was going crazy,” He tells Ebro. “They came and told me it’s 50 thousand pounds to extend the time and I told them ‘do it, I will pay even 200 thousand pounds here.”
Davido also recalled how his billionaire father brought over 50 security personnel to disrupt his first ever show and how he sold selling his TV sets to raise money after being cut off cash supply for dropping out of school to chase music.
He spoke on working with American rapper Casanova on the single, ‘ 2 AM’, who flew down to Nigeria to shoot some scenes for the visuals of their collaboration.
”He called me up, told me he was coming over, next thing he sent me a picture of the flight, so I started making calls to make sure he was good.”
Davido defined his sound as Afro-fusion as he tried to clarify the misconception concerning the terms ‘Afrobeat’ and ‘Afrobeats’. “The originator of Afrobeat is Fela… When African music was getting big in the UK, they needed a name for it, so they called it Afrobeats but if you ask me the original Afrobeat is Fela.
Me I call my music Afro-fusion but I feel like my Afrobeat is so big, so I go with it,” he educated. Davido also name-dropped some of the poping names in the Nigerian Alte music scene including Odunsi The Engine, Santi and Pretty Boy D.O.
Davido concluded the interview by educating the listeners on the misconceptions that surround Africa especially in the United States and why they need to reconnect with their roots, a sentiment that was shared by Ebro who indicated interest to visit Nigeria soon.
