Last night, popular three-member production and disc jockey group Major Lazer gave their first Nigerian headline performance in a festival-esque event dubbed ‘Major Lazer Soundsystem Live’ as part of their ongoing African tour which has taken them to South Africa and Malawi.
The name ‘Major Lazer’, (consisting Diplo, Walshy Fire and DJ Jillionaire) has become very known among Nigeria’s legion of music lovers and party revellers – thanks to their discography of unignorable hits and symbiotic ties with Nigerian music heavyweights; Wizkid, Skales, Burna Boy, Kizz Daniel and Mr Eazi who recently penned a record deal with the groups prolific and widely-celebrated EDM producer, Diplo.
“All over the world, Nigeria is making an important impact and shaping the sound of music – we identify with your culture and are very happy that you accept and have come out to celebrate with us”, Diplo pronounced, addressing the thousands of excited guests who converged at the Hard Rock Beachfront to witness the event. As warm-up, DJ Consequence, DJ Xclusive and DJ Aye took turns diffusing the atmosphere with an array of infectious music while hosts; Do2dtun, Nenny B and Bolly Lomo kept attendees charged ahead of the group’s appearance.

At exactly 12:45 am, the trio made an entrance, receiving praises from fans who had been waiting all night. “I want to take off my shoes”, yelled an excited guest who was visibly ready to have a great time. She wasn’t wrong. The trio took turns on the turntable, stimulated guests and spun heads throughout their one-hour set. It was an electronic affair and the group made sure to show fans what they are about, performing a slew of local and international hits, mixing, bending, speeding up the pace and hyping fans all at the same time.
To the surprise of many, Nigerian international pop star, Skales was the only guest who got to share the stage with the EDM group, performing a verse from his African remix of their 2017 smash hit ‘Run Up’.
Major Lazer has recently dropped three singles (Tied Up ft Mr Eazi, Loyal ft Kizz Daniel and All My Life ft Burna Boy) and a number of guests came hoping to see a guest performance from one of their recent Nigerian collaborators. The absence of guest performances is proof that the EDM group came to deliver a ‘Major Lazer Experience’ and this was well executed.
Bringing the show to an explosive close, the group played and performed their 2017 pan-African hit, ‘Particula’ which served as the perfect climax for such an exhilarating night.
