#NigeriaDecides: “Canada” Trends On Twitter As Nigerians Declare Disillusionment

By Chux Odoh

For hours now, the North American country, Canada, has been hanging around the top 3 most trending topics in Nigeria and it’s for the most unlikely reasons – the postponement of the country’s Presidential and National Assembly elections which was scheduled to hold today.

Nigerians woke up to the surprising news that the elections had been shifted by seven days because of what the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) via a statement by its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu described as ‘challenges with logistics.”

The announcement immediately sparked up a social media outrage, as Nigerians lamented about the situation even as some called for the resignation of the INEC chairman.

But for some Nigerian’s whether it’s just for bants or they meant it prefer to migrate from the country to a place where the society works – That’s Canada.

Canada in recent years has become a favourite permanent migration destination for many Nigerians. Last year, the Canadian Government had to employ more stringent measures before granting asylum to most Nigerians who migrate to the country without valid papers while using the United States borders.
