The 2019 Nigerian general elections have seen a number of Nigerian entertainers advocate for better leadership and supporting various candidates. Many of them have been called out for not being involved in the political process or not caring much for the state of the Nigerian nation. But that is not entirely true, several musicians, actors and performers have used their celebrity status to advocate for the unity and betterment of the country.
Case in point: twenty-five years ago, King Sunny Ade assembled over thirty other acts to make a juju national anthem. The Way Forward as the album was titled, featured his contemporaries Orlando Owoh, Dele Abiodun, Malik Showman, as well as younger stars Oritz Wiliki, Charley Boy, Bola Ajibola, Segun Arinze and many others.
The song went on to become one of KSA’s most memorable records, owing to the multi-lingual nature and the unifying message.
As Nigeria heads to the polls tomorrow, it is worth remembering that regardless of who wins, the unity of Nigeria is the most important.
